Adele, Simon Cowell, Warner Music Owner Len Blavatnik Rise on U.K. Rich List

LONDON - Adele, Simon Cowell, Paul McCartney and Daniel Radcliffe are among the British entertainment industry figures who saw their fortunes rise last year, according to the annual Sunday Times Rich List.

Published on Sunday by the newspaper owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., the list of Britain's 1,000 richest people also includes such new entrants as Coldplay star Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow and two other Hollywood power couples - Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter, as well as Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas.

Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, who owns a 30 percent stake in soccer club Arsenal, is the new leader of the Rich List with an estimated fortune of $20.3 billion (13.3 billion).

Second is Russia-born Len Blavatnik, the owner of Warner Music Group, who is the highest riser in terms of wealth on the list. With $16.8 billion (11 billion, up from 7.6 billion last year), he climbed from the fifth spot on the 2012 list.

Another entrepreneur is the next highest-ranking entertainment industry figure on the list. Richard Branson ranks 19th this year, down from the 16th spot in 2012. But his fortune rose 3 percent to $5.3 billion (3.5 billion), according to the list.

Clive Calder, who sold Zomba Records in 2002, ranks 58th (with an unchanged net worth of $2.1 billion), while Richard Desmond, whose Northern & Shell group owns Channel 5 and newspapers, comes in 98th (down from 73rd as his! wealth dropped from $1.5 billion to $1.3 billion) in a tie with Lord Sugar, the host of BBC show The Apprentice, who is down from last year's 92nd spot.

Performers on the list include McCartney in the 133rd spot, compared to last year's 124th. His fortune is up 2 percent over the past year to $1.04 billion (680 million), according to the Sunday Times, which cited his touring income.

In the annual showdown of music competition TV show creators, Simon Fuller this year took place 238 - down from 233 last year - with an unchanged fortune of $571 million (375 million), whileCowell rose from the 339th spot to the 319th spot with his slightly increased fortune of $380 million.

Overall, the Sunday Times said 88 people on its rich list are from the media/film/music sectors. The finance, real estate and industry sectors have more representatives on the list, but the entertainment industry is ahead of the 65 individuals ranked from the computer/Internet/telecom sectors.

The highest-ranking entertainment personality on the Sunday Times list of the 60 richest young people outside the field of sports is Radcliffe in the 10th spot with an estimated fortune of $91 million (60 million), up from $82 million last year, which had ensured him the eighth spot.

Spotify founder Daniel Ek ranks sixth with $380 million, Keira Knightley is 17th ($47 million, up 3 percent), and Adele ranks 18th with $45.7 million, a year-over-year gain of 50 percent.

In a separate ranking of richest people in Ireland, U2 are the highest-ranking entertainment industry representatives in the 14th spot with a fortune of $792 million (520 million), up from 514 million in 2012.
